Summer in School
Description- nearing end of first semester of blended learning summer school

Impact: We have one more week of school in summer 1st semester. Out of elven students I have two that have “F’s” and two that have “D’s”. The rest are “A’s” and “B’s”. So for the students that have lower than a “C” they were told that they had to come in on Friday and work for two hours to at least make up half of the credit they lost. The reason they are not doing well is because they are not completing the online portion of the class. A couple of the kids were upset and told me that they never realized what they had to do. I tried not to get upset but how could I not when I told the kids each day to make sure they emailed, called or texted me if they had any issues? The students that do have good grades were the ones that emailed, call and texted me all the time to make sure they were doing what was expected. In my opinion the four students were not disciplined enough to work at home and now they are going to waste one-hundred and twenty-five dollars for a class that they more than likely will fail.

Intent: Online learning is not for every student. I believe that with the 21st century skills we are teaching our kids we expect them to be more responsible and accountable for their work, which is great! But I also think that if students are going to be more accountable they also have a choice to make about their education. I think that students should get the right to decide if they want to do an online program or not. I am concerned with students that are forced into a program or class that is all online.
When I started looking for a Master’s program I was extremely unsure of completing it all online. I searched and searched for a Technology program that was traditional but to no avail. The first week of class I was a mess because I was overwhelmed and had no idea what to do. I honestly was ready to drop the course and I think I would have if I had not paid for the courses. I am very thankful that I stayed because I love it now but my worry is for my kids who give up the moment something is too difficult. This past year I had students get so upset because their computer wasn’t working properly that they gave up and refused to do the assignment!!!!
Yes, I believe that technology has a place in the classroom, I am just not sure that all kids can learn online. I could be totally wrong but then again every student is different and it’s an educator’s responsibility to make sure they are meeting the needs of every single student- not just the majority.
